# Protobuf Format

Protobuf is supported when using a dedicated Protobuf spec.

Using protobuf without a spec is technically [possible](/docs/describing-data-sources/protobuf#generated-taxi), but discouraged, and not currently supported.

Instead, use a dedicated [Protobuf](/docs/describing-data-sources/protobuf) spec.
